The outgoing Social Democratic State Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) was awarded a huge victory in Carinthia's state elections on Sunday by increasing support by more than 10% and coming close to the absolute majority with 47.8% of the votes cast. The right-wing party FPÖ came second with 22.8%, followed by the conservative ÖVP with 15.65 %, then by Team Kärnten with 5.7% and finally by the Greens with 3.1%.
On behalf of the PES Group, Catiuscia Marini, President of the Region of Umbria (Italy) and of the PES Group in the CoR, warmly welcomed the results, congratulating Peter Kaiser (member of the PES Group since 2013), for his success:
"This historic electoral success is an impressive confirmation of Peter Kaiser's outstanding accomplished work these last 5 years. He has set the right priorities in his political work. He focused on concrete policy projects and never gave in to the populist discourse. On many occasions, Peter also advocated for a more European approach in tackling the urgent challenges we are currently facing, such as demography and climate change. This course has clearly paid off and can serve as an inspiring example for many other regions."
The programme of the SPÖ for the upcoming years is based on 5 priorities: Investment in Child care and education, quality employment for all, a sustainable economy and a high quality health system.
