Today the PES Group in the CoR is launching a website dedicated to its latest initiative: a seminar on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. It will be hosted in Brussels, on 29 November 2016, in cooperation with Rainbow Rose, the LGBT network of the Party of European Socialists (PES). The seminar will raise awareness about the divergences in rights accorded to LGBTI people across the EU, and will discuss the role of local and regional authorities in combatting discrimination and promoting equality.
"LGBTI rights are human rights", says Catiuscia Marini, President of the PES Group. "No one in the EU should be treated as a second-class citizen and be stigmatised for their sexual orientation. Equality of rights is one of the most important principles of the PES Group, and a founding ideal of a progressive European project. That's why this initiative is so important to our members."
Ahead of the seminar, the website will host news, points of view and best practices relating to LGBTI rights, illustrating how progressive politicians at the local and regional level can advance civil rights and social inclusion for LGBTI people.
