Dear members and alternates,
We are delighted to invite you to the next external PES Group meeting, which will take place on 3rd March 2023 in Valencia (Spain), at the invitation of Ximo Puig, President of the Regional Government of Valencia. More detailed information about the event will follow in due time, but please pencil the date already in your calendar.
Building up to the event and in cooperation with PES Women, our Group is planning a communications campaign about best practices in preventing and combatting violence against women.
Too many women are subject to gender-based harassment at work, on public transport, in public spaces or on social media. Too many women are still victims of feminicide because their pleas had been either underestimated or simply ignored by those competent to provide assistance. As Social Democrats, we have always advocated zero tolerance for gender-based violence, striving to elaborate effective policy responses that combat gender-based violence and provide support and protection for all women.
Progressive cities and regions have a key role to play in raising awareness and in putting forward gender-responsive measures. We would therefore like to invite you to share your best practices in the field of preventing and combating violence against women.
Your best practices may relate to:
- Workshops and other activities to raise awareness on the issue;
- Services to address gender-based violence such as funding shelters and other safe accommodation options for survivors;
- Public policies rethinking public transportation adapted to women's needs and schedules and responding to their safety and security needs;
- Curricula and learning, including lifelong learning, environments that promote the respect for women and girls;
- Preventing cyber violence and online harassment against women and girls;
- Improving access to adequate housing for women;
- Adequate street lighting to improve safety and increase a sense of security;
- Codes of conduct of local/regional administrations safeguarding gender equality and promoting zero tolerance for gender-based harassment and violence.
- And many moreβ¦
