Standing up for Europe: PES leaders set a clear line on EU–US relations

Ahead of the European Council, leaders of the Party of European Socialists (PES) endorsed the declaration “Standing up for Europe”, reaffirming a united progressive position on the future of EU–US relations in a rapidly changing geopolitical context.

The declaration makes clear that while transatlantic cooperation remains important, it must be based on mutual respect, democratic values and a genuine partnership between equals. Recent actions and strategic orientations of the current U.S. administration signal a departure from multilateralism and an explicit attempt to weaken the European Union as both an economic force and a political project. These attempts will not succeed.

Progressive leaders firmly rejected any form of external interference in Europe’s democratic life, including trade pressure, disinformation campaigns and the support of far-right and extremist movements. Europe will not lower its standards, compromise its social model or accept violations of its sovereignty.

Luca Menesini at pre council meeting

At the PES Presidency and Pre-Council Meetings, Luca Menesini, President of the PES Group in the European Committee of the Regions, brought the perspective of cities and regions into the discussion, underlining that Europe’s strength is built locally and defended collectively.

“The European project proves that economic strength and social justice are not opposites,” said Luca Menesini. “Our welfare systems, labour protections and public services have improved the lives of millions. Europe does not need to imitate others, it needs the confidence to stand by its own model.”

While standing firm on principles, PES leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the American people, the Democratic Party and all democratic forces willing to uphold shared values. The PES family will continue to strengthen cooperation with progressive U.S. states and cities, fostering sub-federal partnerships to address common challenges such as resilient supply chains, clean technologies and global justice.

In a context where international cooperation, academic freedom and democratic checks and balances are increasingly under pressure, the PES declaration positions Europe as a pillar of stability, democracy and social progress, standing up for its values at home and on the global stage.
