The Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) emerged as the winner of Sunday's municipal and mayoral elections, obtaining 37.62% of the votes cast, which puts the Party in a strong position before the parliamentary election later this year. PSD won the mayorship of Romania's capital, Bucharest, as well as all six seats for district mayors in the capital, with PES Group member Robert Negoiță having been re-elected in the 3rd district.
On behalf of the PES Group, President Catiuscia Marini, President of Umbria (Italy), warmly welcomed the PSD results, congratulating in particular the new progressive female mayor of Bucharest, Gabriela Firea who wants to transform the capital city in a regional engine based on job creation for youth, the promotion of innovation, and the involvement of citizens through bigger participation in policy-making. "I wish Gabriela much success in the implementation of her vision for Bucharest and am convinced that she will swiftly deliver on these urgent social priorities", she stressed.
The President also warmly welcomed the re-election of PES Group member Mariana Gâju, Mayor of Cumpăna.
