Sharing economy: Local dimension firmly anchored in European Parliament's report

The PES Group warmly welcomes the adoption of the European Parliament's report on a 'European Agenda for the collaborative economy', drafted by S&D member Nicola Danti (Italy), which takes up a series of key PES requests.

Commenting on the report, PES Group member Benedetta Brighenti, CoR rapporteur on the Collaborative economy and online platforms: a shared view of cities and regions, stressed:

"The collaborative or sharing economy is a new phenomenon which brings both opportunities and challenges to Europe's cities and regions. I am pleased to see that - thanks to our close cooperation with the S&D Groups' rapporteur - the role of local and regional authorities as a key actor of the sharing economy is clearly recognised in the report, and that reference is made to the needs of rural and disadvantaged areas. Likewise, the report shares our vision that the sharing economy is more than a mere business model: it is a tool for participative democracy which can strengthen our communities and help them to becoming more sustainable and inclusive."

Echoing the CoR opinion, the Danti Report also calls on the European Commission to come up with clearer rules on the applicability of existing EU legislation to different collaborative models and to lay down effective criteria for making a distinction between peers and professionals.
