LGBTI rights: a best practice from Extremadura, Spain

"Twenty years ago, Extremadura was the only region in Spain that did not have its own body to protect people’s rights in the area of sexual identity or orientation", says Extremadura President and CoR PES member Guillermo Fernández Vara. "Since then, so much progress has been made in terms of LGBTI policies, activism, and the situation on the ground that our autonomous community is now at the cutting edge nationally when it comes to promoting these rights and liberties", he continues.

Extremadura is a role model in terms of progressive legislation when it comes to protecting and promoting LGBTI rights. A new law was recently adopted, aimed at social equality for LGBTI people and focusing on public policies to combat discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. Proud of this achievement, President Guillermo Fernández Vara reminds that this legislation is currently being used as a basis for developing similar legislation in various autonomous communities across Spain, as well as in certain Latin American countries.
