In the framework of the Chantier des idées (Ideas Forum), an initiative of the Belgian Socialist Party (PS) involving the organisation of numerous events and conferences with a view to developing a shared vision about the progressive responses to the current major socio-economic and societal challenges, the CoR PES Group will be holding in Brussels on 18 November a seminar on a Progressive vision of the sharing economy, in cooperation with the Institut Emile Vandervelde, the think tank of the Belgian PS.
Opened by PES Group President Catiuscia Marini and moderated by Dennis Abbott, Senior Communications Adviser at Burson-Marsteller, the debates will address two key questions: Is consumer protection at European level up to the challenges of the sharing economy? and Will the sharing economy open up new areas for public action by local and regional authorities?.
Among the speakers are Evelyne Gebhardt MEP (S&D/Germany), European Parliament's rapporteur on the Digital single market; PES Group members Benedetta Brighenti, rapporteur of the CoR opinion on the Local and regional dimension of the sharing economy and Deputy Mayor of Castelnuovo Rangone (Italy), and Hella Dunger-Löper, Berlin State Secretary for European Affairs with responsibility for active citizenship (Germany); Despina Spanou, Director for Consumer Protection at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety; Guillermo Beltrà, Head of Legal and Economic Department of the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC); Christian Iaione, Professor of public law at the LUISS University of Rome; and Khushboo Balwani, Connector at OuiShare.
The seminar will be preceded by a session on Understanding the sharing economy: background and challenges, including case studies and a discussion on the way forward for the sharing economy in Belgium.
The works will be concluded by Jens Nilsson MEP (S&D/Sweden), Co-Chair of the European Parliament's intergroup on social economy and third sector.
