ABOUT THE EVENT

'Cohesion' in the social and political context means the 'bond' or 'glue' that binds individuals together into societies. In the European Union context specifically, it refers to the bond between different territorial entities, between regions or areas with very different socio-economic characteristics and challenges – and as an EU policy or EU policies, cohesion refers to the attempt to hold together the EU by developing the regions' potentials, by fighting disparities and by promoting cooperation and exchange in order to improve the living conditions across the Union.

These policies have developed over more than two decades now and successive enlargements of the European Union have created new challenges and responses. The financial, economic and social crisis and the up-coming debates about EU finances provide the backdrop against which the future of cohesion policy needs to be debated, and eventually to be decided on. Has the policy delivered its stated objectives? What does the experience tell us about future prospects? Have new challenges been included successfully into the policy design, implementation and adjustment mechanisms? How is the political and economic context of cohesion policy changing – and does it matter? And what future for the idea of solidarity in the context of a reformed and reforming EU Cohesion Policy?
